Some kayakers can't stand to sit around for long periods of time. For centuries it has been a common practice to stand in canoes, but standing kayaks are a fairly recent development. Used standing kayaks allow the person paddling the kayak to stand with their ankles strapped to the kayak while operating the kayak.
The type of kayak needed for this kind of activity is a wide inflatable kayak. Operating from a standing position doesn't seem to slow the paddler down much if at all. Standing kayaks are frequently taken down fast rivers as a leisure time activity.
